Mr. Fred Van
Hecke,
VI Dan, Wisconsin State
Director USTF The Academy of Martial
Arts in Grafton was founded in May of 1984 as the Ozaukee Academy of Martial
Arts under the leadership of Third Dan Larry Lamont, an Instructor in
Accounting at the Milwaukee Area Technical College, and of F. M. Van Hecke,
who now owns the school and serves, since May of 1999, as its Headmaster.
The school grew out of a branch of the Academy of Self-Defense of James M.
Jaeger of West Bend, Wisconsin, opened a few doors from the current school's
location in 1980, and was first affiliated with the now defunct American
Black Belt Federation.
Both Lamont and Van Hecke had considerable prior martial arts experience,
Lamont with, among other institutions, the United States Marine Corps where
he served (in Viet Nam) with distinction, discharged with the rank of
Captain, and Van Hecke with schools in New York City and Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. The first Black Belts to pass to First Dan at the Grafton School
were Thomas Minesal, now Third Dan, and Stanton Ruppel, on December 14,
1986; both had commenced their studies with the predecessor school.
